Retractable Leash Policy
RETRACTABLE LEASHES
FLEXI-RETRACTABLE LEASHES ARE DANGEROUS!
For your dog’s safety and the well-being of all of our guests, Bark-A-Bout enforces a No Flexi-Retractable Leash Policy within our facility.
Upon entering Bark-A-Bout, your dog MUST be on a regular leash. If you are currently using a flexi-retractable leash, please lock your leash on a SHORT distance or borrow one of our leashes to enter our lobby and or walk your dog around our facility.
For questions, please feel free to ask one of our fur’endly receptionists. For your convenience, this leash stand is located near our front entrance. Please return your borrowed leash before leaving Bark-A-Bout.
RETRACTABLE LEASHES ARE WEAPONS!!!
Bark-A-Bout does not allow “retractable leashes” or “flexi leashes” in our Bark Park or lobby. Here’s why!!!………
LEASH BURNS: Retractable leashes, especially the thin string variety, can very easily cause lacerations and leash burns. When your pooch races past you and the retractable line zips across your bare skin. Unwarranted injuries can be prevented if you try the flat, tape style retractable leash.
ENTANGLEMENT OR STRANGULATION: Not only can retractable leashes burn us, they can also get twisted and easily knotted around a dog’s neck or legs. If your pooch panics and jerks the moment they get hog-tied, the leash will be pulled tighter. In a perfect situation you can loosen the knotted cord that has wrapped around his neck, however if there is a hostile dog or animal entangled, the situation can instantaneously become life-threatening.
FATAL ACCIDENTS: If your dog darts away quickly, even with a retractable leash on him, he may dart even further. If you are not alert enough to put the brakes on the leash, his abrupt behavior and retractable leash could put him smack on the road, right in front of a speeding car.
A THIN STRING IS HARD TO SEE: Pedestrians, cyclists and others may become entangled in a nearly invisible leash string, causing harm to themselves, you or your dog.
THE LEASH DROPS: Because these leashes rarely have a wrist strap and are sometimes heavy and bulky, the owner must hold the handle firmly. Dropping the plastic mechanism is a regular occurrence. What’s worse, if you drop the handle, the lack of tension can send the heavy handle hurdling toward your dog. Not only could the heavy plastic handle smack your dog in the head, if your dog is spooked by the leash handle zipping toward him, he may take off running off and possibly into the street.
THE CORD IS GRABBED: If you instinctively grab the cord/tape while it is being pulled from the handle, you might suffer from immediate injury like cuts and burns.
THE CORD WRAPS AROUND YOU: Poor handling can also cause the cord/tape to twist around you or someone else’s fingers resulting in severe deep wounds, or worse, amputation. (Yes, it happens frequently… eww!)
THE COLLAR BREAKS OR COMES OFF YOUR DOG: so the leash retracts quickly, breaks and comes barreling straight at you: The moment the string or collar breaks or comes off, the leash will retract at top speed while the other end of the line whips around your dog at the same full momentum leading to serious injuries to face, teeth, and eyes.
TENSION MAY CAUSE THE PLASTIC CARTRIDGE TO EXPLODE: The moment your dog begins to run, you push the button to hit the brakes. If your plastic handled leash cartridge is faulty or old, the brittle plastic hand-held barrel can become an explosive grenade, leaving metal and plastic debris flying outward.
A BIG DOG ON A TINY LEASH: Retractable leashes need to be size and weight appropriate. A big, muscular dog requires a more heavy-duty leash. Diesel, Titan and Samson will definitely require a sturdier leash than Princess Tiny Tink.
